Application of Natural Fibers in Home Furnishings for Sustainable Interior Design

Abstract

Sustainable interior design creates interior spaces using design principles, like functionality, accessibility, and aesthetics and expands the foremost target to include environmental considerations. Environmentally sustainable interior design has become a major issue in interior design practice, according to the literature the sustainable choices in real practice is still limited in interior design. Particularly where materials selection is concerned. Many studies showed that despite the development of the concept of sustainability, many architects, designers, and users do not adopt sustainable design strategies, especially concerning the choice of natural materials in the processes of interior design. Environmentally sustainable interior design implies working toward the promotion of indoor environmental quality by improving indoor air quality and human comfort and the use of sustainable interior. The present study aims to develop a comprehensive understanding on the application of natural fibers in home furnishings among the end users to create sustainable indoor environment. The interior design incorporates furnishings from design history and plays a very important place in decorating the interiors. This paper discusses in detail about the application of natural fibers such as bamboo, banana, coir, sisal, and hemp, flax for floor furnishings, wall furnishings, and decorative products. The existing knowledge was obtained through various sources such as journal articles, conference papers, e-books, and other publications.
