Title: A Literary Review on Sandal Wood: Santalum Album Linn
Authors: Miraaj, R.; Sathiyaseelan, V.
Abstract: The Siddha Medicine is the ancient and mother of traditional medical system which is practiced in Sri Lanka and Tamil speaking region of the world. The system mostly focused to treat diseases by using combination of medicinal plants, metals & minerals and product of animal kingdom to prepare Siddha drug formulations. In medicinal plants wood has a special place in Siddha system which is the most common part used in medicine preparation This review study aimed to develop scientific biography evidence for forest woods which are used in Siddha system and data for this study were collected from related Siddha traditional text books and research publications on websites from July to September 2024. Santalum album L. belonging to family of Santalaceae, is a small tropical tree, is commonly well-known as sandalwood, and Chandanam. The plant is considered as the holiest, valuable and commercially important tree which is also used as timber in Srilanka. The plant is well known for its exclusive and characteristic perfume. Also, this plant is considered sacred and its importance and usage are also mentioned in Vedas, Puranas of Hinduism and Buddhism. The heartwood of the plant is very expensive and it has great commercial value in the local and global market as it is enhanced with fragranced essential oil. The aromatic essential oil of the plant is used in various cosmetics purpose, perfume industry, food products, aroma therapy and pharmaceutical industries. Traditionally, the plant is used in various medicinal systems such as Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani and Traditional doctors to cure diseases like gastric irritability, jaundice, dysentery, used as a tonic for liver, heart and Brain. In Siddha system, the sandalwood plant is used as an expectorant, diuretic, astringent, stimulant, coolant, sedative, demulcent antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, hepato protective and cardio- protective properties. The fragrant parts of sandalwood oil constitutes of a- and ẞ santalols. The extensive removal and unawareness of S. album over the past century led to increased vulnerability to extinction of the plant so it is procured in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Title: A Descriptive Study on Etiological Factors of Kabala Kanaapu (Sinusitis) Among Patients in Kodikamam-J/327 GS Division, Jaffna District
Authors: Miraaj, R.; Sailajah, S.
Abstract: Kabalakkanapu (Sinusitis) is one of the common disorder seen by the general practitioners, which are troubling the mankind. Although Kabalakkanapu is create physical and psychological discomfort. Sinusitis can be broadly defined as inflammation of one or more of the para nasal sinuses. The paranasal sinuses are lined with mucous membranes that have tiny hairs on them (ciliated epithelium). These mucous membranes produce a secretion that runs down through the nose and throat. Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Acute sinusitis symptoms are facial pain and pressure, blocked nose, nasal discharge, reduced sense of smell, congestion and post nasal drip. These symptoms are more similar to Kabalakkanapu which is mentioned in the Siddha text book of Parajasekaram- Siroroga nithanam. I made my research involving 50 members diagnosed as Kabalakkanapu patients. Questionnaire was text book. Made on the basis of Siddha concept of etiological factors of Kabalakkanapu said in Siddha text book. At the end of the study, I have really realized that "Prevention is better than cure" because the people who were exposed to the etiological factors of Kabalakkanapu without awareness were gotten the asthmatic episodes. If we make awareness about the etiological factors of Kabalakkanapu, the patient will take care of their own health. From this study results and observation, I found that the patient having H/O, exposure to dust and other allergens was 46 members (92%); H/O, exposures to cool air and intake of cold water was 38 members (76%); H/O, patients with nasal septal deviation was 14 members (28%) & nasal polyps was 12 members (24%); H/O, allergic to cosmetics was 20 members (40%). This study will be essential role of siddha physicians to early diagnosis, prognosis and prevention of the disease. Further literary and clinical studies are necessary in future.

Authors: Gumuthagini, V.; Sathiyaseelan, V.

Title: Qualitative Chemical Analysis of Amalgamation of Mercury and Sulphur (Kajjali) in the Metallic Preparations Of Siddha Drugs
Authors: Thillany, P.V.; Sathiyaseelan, V.; Velauthamurty, K.
Abstract: Mercury is one of the extensively used metal in the preparations of siddha medicine after purification process. Amalgamation of purified mercury and purified sulphur is called Kajjali. Current issue has raised causing doubtful condition in using certain Siddha drugs that contains metallic raw materials, hence purification of them is very essential in order to avoid the side effects of the drugs. So the objective of the study is to identify the chemical state of mercury and sulphur after purification and in formation of amalgam (Kajjali) of both. For this, an experimental qualitative chemical analysis was conducted in the Department of Chemistry, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. After proper purification of both mercury and sulphur according to siddha literature, the amalgamation was made by combining them in the pharmacy, Unit of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Qualitative analysis was done with suitable reagents. As per to the observations, the relevant data's regarding the precipitations collected and justified. Results of the qualitative analysis suggested that each purified mercury and purified sulphur contains inorganic precipitations of certain substances and the amalgamation (kajjali) also contains both the combination of them. The findings indicated that purification of mercury and sulphur in amalgamation (kajjali) resulted in obtaining a chemical change from the base substances into inorganic forms of them which are nontoxic, to be used in medical preparations and industrial purposes. Apart from this, poor quality drugs which are of inappropriately detoxified raw materials can produce major illnesses. This is a vast problem arising from unauthorized dealers or persons who did not have qualified siddha medicine degree.
