Authors: Karunaanithy, K.; Santhirasegaram, S.
Abstract: Saving located within economic psychology plays an important role in individual,
household and country’s development. As saving decisions areinfluenced by
attitudinal factors, this study attempts to identify them by applying a factor analysis
because of the latentnature of saving. Based on stratified random sampling method
500 households were selected from 5 job groups from all DS divisions of the
Jaffna district. Questionnaire with 21 Likert type questionswas used to collect
data under a survey method. Six factors emerged out of the factor analysis and
accounted for 52% of variance. ‘need for saving’ and ‘competency in finance’
‘formal sector saving habit’,‘debt avoidance’ correlated positively and significantly
with saving. Households which understand the need for saving, who are competent
in financial matters, have a habit of formal sector saving, and wish to avoid debt
have a positive attitude towards saving. Therefore, results of this study propose
that policy measures which aim to enhance household saving should consider
about these attitudinal factors when developing saving instruments. It might be
beneficial to identify individual differences in attitude as it helps the proposed
development framework for the Northern Province as saving is indispensable for
accumulation of investment.</summary>

Authors: Sinthuja, N.; Hemaluxjini, T.
Abstract: Working capital management is a very essential component of corporate finance
because it directly affects the liquidity and profitability of the firm and it is a key
factor in determining financial performance of the firms. A firm is required to
maintain a balance between liquidity and profitability while conducting its day to
day operations. Liquidity is a precondition to ensure that firms are able to meet its
short-term obligations and its continued flow can be guaranteed from a profitable
venture. Therefore working capital management concept is important to fund the
difference between short-term assets and short-term liabilities. This study is to
investigate the relationship between working capital management and financial
performance of listed Manufacturing companies in Sri Lanka. For the purpose
of this study 28 listed manufacturing firms in Colombo stock exchange were
incorporated as sample. The Data were collected from firm’s annual reports over
the period of 2011 to 2017 from the CSE website. Cash conversion cycle, current
ratio and current liabilities to total assets ratio used to measure the working capital
management whereas return on assets used to measure financial performance. The
hypotheses are examined by using correlation analysis and regression analysis.
The overall result reveals that there is a significant relationship between working

Authors: Abeysiriwardena, N.K.
Abstract: This paper attempts to understand the graduate underemployment problem in the
western province of Sri Lanka. Underemployment has been identified as an emerging
issue in the world as well as in Sri Lanka as it reveals a significant mismatch
between supply and demand in the labour market. In literature, unemployment
has gained significant attention of policy makers, but underemployment has
remained a largely unexplored phenomenon. Therefore, it is essential to do more
research about underemployment to fill this gap in literature. This article is aimed
at assessing the variables of graduate underemployment and identifying coping
strategies of underemployed graduates. For the purpose of this study, perceived
underemployment was used as a measure of underemployment. The dimensions
used by Feldman (1994) to measure graduate underemployment are applied in
this study. The data was collected through a questionnaire from a sample of 100
graduates as a pilot study. The study assessed the impacts of a range of variables
such as gender, age, education level on graduate underemployment. Statistical tools
were used to study the significance of the relationships between these variables
and perceived underemployment of graduates. Results revealed diverse impacts
of variables such as gender differences, employment sector and the status of the
degree on the underemployment of graduates. Strategies such as self-initiated
job hunting, studying further and rethink about career goals were identified as
the coping strategies which are consistent with previous literature. Finally the
recommendations for underemployment and implications were discussed by
providing directions for future researchers.</summary>
